Welcome to Dollars & Divorce. I recently went through a divorce and came to realize how stressful it can be to divide finances with a soon to be ex-spouse, while addressing the more emotional issues of child custody and visitation rights. Finances almost become an after thought. In reality, addressing the financial division of assets (and liabilities) can be even more stressful than child-related issues as most people do not want to hurt their children by preventing them from seeing their mother or father. Spouses fight over the most trivial details: who gets the furniture, the entertainment center, the kitchen table, etc. While fighting over these items generally causes little damage, other than extracting a pound of emotional flesh, there ARE some serious issues at stake before saying goodbye. Ask yourself: has your spouse hidden assets, incurred debt in your name without your knowledge, etc. Divorce planning is difficult for most people because they have virtually no experience in this area. Fortunately for me, I did not have a very contentious divorce, but it sure would have helped if there was a website or other venue where I could have sought advice without spending thousands of dollars on accountants and lawyers! This is why I have created Dollars & Divorce: so people will have a place to go to share ideas and challenges during this very stressful time in their lives. I hope we can join together to create some good out of a bad situation.
Sincerely,
MCS
